Discovery Bay Employees Give Back
Discovery Bay’s cool factor has risen quite a bit since the launch of our Atari Arcade—so much that the folks here totally wanted to spread the cool around Seattle. Whether charity walks or runs, events for animals, volunteer opportunities, or fundraisers, you better believe that Discovery Bay is there in some way, shape, or form.
Some say that the proof is in the pictures. I don’t really believe this, but we are a pretty photogenic group, so I compiled a few pictures from the events we’ve participated in over the last six months.
Labor Day Half Marathon September 5, 2011
Most people were sleeping in or getting ready for a Labor Day grill-off with the neighbors on the block. Natalie, our Director of PR, was tying her shoes (double knotting), pinning on her bib, and firing up her iPod, ready to take on the Labor Day Half Marathon in Woodinville, WA. Not only did she break her personal best, but she also didn’t even have to stop for a bathroom break! Way to go, Nat :).

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure September 14-16, 2011
Having raised over $5 million in Seattle alone, the 3-Day Walk for the Cure is the behemoth of charity events. It’s what I imagine every charity event strives to become.
Kate, our Business Development Manager, participated in the 3-Day Walk with a group of friends, raising well over $3,000. The adventure was filled with endless support from communities—a family actually offered their home for those needing a bathroom break, while others made breakfast for the participants—tear-jerking but inspiring moments, and most importantly, hope from every walker, bystander, and breast cancer victim. Kate can’t wait to start fundraising for 2012 and recruiting more walkers!

In their walking garb (and might I add, AWESOME T-shirts), these fearless ladies are about to change lives!

FidoFEST: Seattle Humane Society’s Walk for the Animals September 25, 2011
Jackie, our Sales Manager who doubles as a secret agent/animal rights activist, participated in quite possibly the coolest event held for animals in Seattle. FidoFest supports Seattle’s Humane Society to provide shelter, medical care, and nourishment to pets without homes. This year the walk raised a record breaking $145,000+! With the help of everyone at Discovery Bay and the support of her family and friends, Jackie and her pup, Cooper, raised $550!

Run of Hope Seattle 5K September 25, 2011
The Run of Hope 5K is a race supporting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Fund and Children’s Hospital’s research for pediatric brain tumors. The goal was to raise $250,000, but supporters all over the U.S. surpassed this with flying colors, raising $269,652.91! With the help of my pals and the good people at Discovery Bay, I was able to raise $500 in just four days! This was my second year participating, and so far I’ve raised $1,200 for pediatric brain tumor research.
Here I’m showing off the Run of Hope race shirt—love the logo, love the color! I can’t wait for next year!

It was great to see sponsors like Lululemon, Wizards of the Coast, Pop Chips, Amtrak, and Alaska Airlines (to name a few) support the cause. The swag wasn’t too shabby either. Hello, sustainable grocery/lunch/gym bag!
It was truly amazing to be part of such a wonderful cause. Seeing the valiant crowd of people running their hearts out around the lake and through the hills of Seward Park was one of the most inspiring sights I’ve seen in a long time.
Discovery Bay encourages employees to have a healthy work-life balance. When it involves giving back to the community, Discovery Bay helps employees achieve their goals in any way possible!
Stay tuned for more future events we have in store! Hint: One event involves pineapples and supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
