New Year’s Resolutions—Served Family Style
It’s the first week of the New Year, and already we’re bombarded with lists upon lists of Best New Year’s Resolutions. Albeit inspirational and positive, they’re flooded with the usual suspects—lose weight, quit smoking, be less stressed, read more. What about the positive resolutions you can make that nurture your lifestyle as a family? Because this is our top priority, we’ve put together a three-part series of New Year’s resolutions for the whole family!
Resolution #1: Exercise More Creativity
The holidays are over, and as your bank account probably experienced quite a beating, it’s now time to get back to your budget. This might mean fewer vacations or less-frequent trips to restaurants and movies.
Idea #1: Get creative with the whole family! Why not try a camping night? Pitch a tent indoors or weather permitting, in the backyard; make s’mores (sans campfire), delicious popcorn, or sloppy joes; turn the lights out and use candles; share scary stories; and play games. Use your imagination to make it a truly “camptastic” evening. It’s a fun way to get the family together and feel adventurous at home while saving on travel expenses!
Games to play while camping:
Note: We don’t claim to be food experts, so here to help is a link from Allrecipes.com called Kids in the Kitchen. You’ll find lots of great ideas for kid-friendly preparations that’ll get you even more excited about cooking together as a family!
Idea #2: Tired of cooking the same meals but don’t want to eat out? Encourage the kids to choose a creative meal they can help with. Heck, if they’re old enough, have them cook the entire thing (with adult supervision), then parents can do all the clean-up! This lets the whole family participate and spruces up the usual routine with sprinkles of spontaneity from the kids. Come on, you know you’ve been pining for an excuse to eat mac ’n’ cheese, cereal, or grilled cheese for dinner!
Idea #3: Craft projects are a fun way to engage the whole family. You can go as simple or involved as you want. To keep it simple, pick up some frames from Target or IKEA and have the kids choose their favorite photos to put in them. Then they can decorate the frames to their liking with glitter, scrabble tiles, or sequins. For a more detail-oriented youngin, try model building—most hobby stores have some for all ages. If you’re feeling ambitious, try candle making. Try adding fun scents the kids will love! Some other great options include scrapbooking or decorating old T-shirts (tie-dye is still very much “in”) with paints or stencils! Add some crunch by having the kids pick out their favorite healthy (maybe allow one less-healthy) snacks to munch on.
There are tons of ways to get creative with the family. The point is always to make it a positive and fun experience for everyone! If someone isn’t a fan of an activity, be flexible and encourage them to try something else that keeps them involved. Stay tuned for more installments of our family resolutions series!
